EliteSpeak
Leet (1337) is derived from the word elite. The term has been credited to Cult of the Dead Cow hacker collective. In the 80’s and 90’s, hackers circumvented monitor systems and text filters on bulletin boards (BBS) by using text subsitution, or look-alike characters. For example, “E” would be replaced with “3” or “€”. And “Hello, World!” encoded as H3110 W0r1D!”
For a while now, I’ve been concerned about our right to privacy and the commercialization of user data. The endless intrusion from data brokers has reminded me that we need to protect our right to privacy, our ideas, and our public data.
“Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn’t want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn’t want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.” –A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto
