Leet (1337) is derived from the word elite. The term has been credited to Cult of the Dead Cow hacker collective. In the 80’s and 90’s, hackers circumvented monitor systems and text filters on bulletin boards (BBS) by using text subsitution, or look-alike characters. For example, “E” would be replaced with “3” or “€”. And “Hello, World!” encoded as H3110 W0r1D!”

For a while now, I’ve been concerned about our right to privacy and the commercialization of user data. The endless intrusion from data brokers has reminded me that we need to protect our right to privacy, our ideas, and our public data.
